More expensive lenses offer more exotic options, but don’t be fooled. Lenses can’t compose or design. They simply focus light and offer a specific angle of view. To create an amazing close-up image you do not need a special lens. You may already own a zoom lens. Simply place the focus point at its minimum setting and move your body forward until your subject comes into focus.

Once your subject is in focus, simply ensure clarity with your depth of field preview button and, if need be, adjust your aperture. Then pick a shutter speed that freezes the creature and an ISO that lights your message well.

For an artist who wishes to truly speak with his camera, an interchangeable lens system is crucial. It’s the very reason we use an SLR. When purchasing a lens we look not just at its zoom range, but also its physical weight and length, minimum focus distance, maximum and minimum apertures and, of course, the cost. (Hold off on any new lens purchases until you truly understand what you need and what you don’t. Please, don’t be taken.)
